“The Memorial Day Song” is the perfect music video for use in any Memorial Day Commemoration.
Almost every holiday has its song – “White Christmas” and “Easter Parade” are classics, but somehow a song for Memorial Day had been missing, until now. This song and video pays tribute to the “men who stood tall with pride, when duty beckoned, all gave some, some gave all.”
Tony Mullins is a history teacher in Sarepta, Louisiana. He attends the local Baptist church and he writes songs. His minister often looks for a song for a special occasion, and asked Tony if he had a song for Memorial Day. Tony had never heard of a Memorial Day song, so he set out to fill the void. Riding around on his tractor, where he gets his ideas, the words just came to him. He wrote them down and showed them to his wife, Carol. “It was easy, really,” Tony recalled. “The whole thing took about 15 minutes.”
Tony took the song to the leader of the church choir who immediately had the melody down. The men’s gospel quartet was the first group to perform the song. That could have been the end of the story, but instead, Tony contacted Cary Rutledge and commissioned him to sing this version of the song. He sent a copy of the song to the Waterloo, New York village office, where Trustee and video producer Dave Duprey heard it. Dave is the co-chair of the annual Memorial Day observance, Celebrate Commemorate, in the upstate New York Village that is the Birthplace of Memorial Day. The words, “We remember those departed on this Memorial Day” became the musical version of the Celebrate Commemorate theme, “Waterloo Remembers.” He was already picturing a video with scenes of local veterans and Memorial Day events that illustrated the words to the song. With the help of the VFW and American Legion Posts, photos of local veterans were solicited.
Since that time in 2005, the video has been viewed more than 212,000 times. It has become very popular for use in churches and by veteran organizations during their Memorial Day services as they pay tribute to those that have made the ultimate sacrifice. This revision of the original music video incorporates new imagery to include additional National Monuments, and has been produced and remastered in High Definition by Duprey Video Productions.
We welcome all to view this video and appreciate the true meaning of Memorial Day. The video has been made available for purchase & download due to the many requests for expedited shipment of DVD’s across the country. We hope that this will make it easier for everyone to enjoy and have available for public use.
